I've installed libc6-i686 to get i686 libraries used on my P3 machine.
But ldd and lsof reveal that they're not being used.  e.g.:

# ldd /bin/echo
        libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x4002b000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
