why was /etc/localtime converted to file?
Hello,
I guess this is a documentation issue... why was /etc/localtime
converted into a file in 2.1.3-4 ? I searched the debian-glibc
archives and did not find an explanation. In the old system (using a
symlink), it was very simple to check whether the timezone was set
correctly. Now it is next to impossible (the mere fact that date(1)
returns correct data right now is not enough for a peace in my mind
:-) )
I have the following suggestions, to be added to documentation:
- a rationale, why the change was undertaken?
- is it still safe to use a symlink, if I wish so? What do I
gain/lose by using the file vs. the symlink?
- how can I verify that my /etc/localtime contains the correct data?
(is there a dump/cat utility to see the contents of /etc/localtime?)
P.S. I am not subscribed to debian-glibc, CC: to me is appreciated.
