Subject: libc6: libc6 2.0.7r-3 install fails - The Sky Falls In!
To: submit@bugs.debian.org
X-Mailer: bug 3.1.5
Package: libc6
Version: 2.0.7r-3
Todays release of libc6_2.0.7r-3 fails. This means all dynamically
linked executables fails (starting with the post install script).
Nothing Else Works At All - Very Bad News Indeed!
This is perhaps related to bug 24201 (if so, someone who knows can merge
these) but in my case this is far more serious than already reported.
I think libc6_2.0.7r-3 should be pulled *immediately*.
To recover my system I had to:
a) download the install floppies and install on to a "spare" partition
(i.e. scrap one if, like me, you had to).
b) mount your real root on /mnt
c) copy over the old libc6 files like this:
for name in `dpkg -L libc6 | egrep ^/lib` ; do cp -p $name /mnt/$name ; done
d) run ldconfig to get your real root into a sensible state:
ldconfig -f /mnt/etc/ld.so.conf -r /mnt
e) reboot, download libc6_2.0.7r-2.deb and install with dpkg -i
I must admit that due to another bug (23995) I snarfed a copy of
libc6_2.0.7r-3 before it was released. The standard dselect update
brokem my ssytem for the second time just now (7pm GMT). The first time
I had to recover my system it took about six hours - hopefully the above
will save other people some time in recovery.
