I would check with a grain of salt. Note that often 'an option' is not
the mainstream choice, and result could be underoptimal or badly working. 

For instance, I'm still unable to add gdal extension to geoserver by using
debian packaged gdal library. So, it is *in theory* possible to do that,
but *in practice* anyone will use third parties stuff to work :-)
