Fixing this turned out to much simpler than expected. I've added a patch
that treats hurd & kfreebsd the same as linux, and forwarded it upstream:

The builds on kFreeBSD now succeed, but the build on Hurd now fails
because of several type errors like:
TypeError: second item in _fields_ tuple (index 17) must be a C type
So we're two FTBFS down, one to go :-)
