GCC 4.9 seems to be not such a great release. Maybe the compiler will be
fixed in Debian by the GCC maintainer, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

That doesn't sound like such a bad idea. Especially as a short term
workaround.
If the issues with WX get fixed before the freeze the change can be
reverted.
