Paulo,

It is our hope that pre-packaged versions of AGG will do. We don't depend on
the GPC stuff so that's not an issue. We *do* however depend on agg including
freetype support which does not appear to be built in by default though I've
heard that some of the packaged agg's (hopefully this is the case for Debian)
do include it.

The configure logic in mapserver for agg is still evolving fairly rapidly
leading up to the mapserver 5 release - I've been doing some of the work. I'd
be happy to be a resource to anyone working on mapserver package support for
agg in Debian.

the biggest change for packaging, I think is the move from GD to AGG for
rendering.
About which, I wonder why is there only a -dev package with static libs.
And current package also removed some non-free parts of the library (gpc).
I'm starting to think GIS people have a specific taste for on-the-edge
libraries and stuff. Is that a funny way to avoid having packages at all
around and possibly also users?

The GIS field has some needs that encourage use of risky libraries (gpc,
and ecw come to mind) and, I suspect, a lower awareness of freeness issues
than is found in some other IT fields.

But I think we just address this as issues arise.
