Benjamin Ducke wrote the GRASS Extensions Manager (GEM) for this
purpose. You can build your own GRASS modules (including C) without
needing the full GRASS source tree & build environent.

recently renamed from "gem" to "gem6" in CVS to avoid an executable
filename conflict.
