Maybe Frankie would answer you better, but, let me try.
I think there are no easy way to tell when a package will be available
(other than developer commitment).
However, you may as well compile your own software, the way you were used to.
I know that this is not what one should expect from Debian (or its
derivatives, like Ubuntu). However, Debian has its own way of doing
thing, to ensure that stable is unbreakable =]
This presents some problems to those who like the cutting edge...I
think I mentioned that to you, because I should
But, I see you got you Debian (or Ubuntu) system up and running quite
fast! Congrats.
