Didrik,

You could try something (like the UseExceptions() method) that is
only in the ng bindings.

I think Debian GIS should just upgrade to the NG bindings
instead of the old bindings in the next packging or if the existing
package isn't settled, change it to use the NG bindings.

The only significant downside to the NG python bindings is
that they don't work with OpenEV yet.
