Hummm verifier l'existence d'une adresse, c'est pas whois, mais plutot
nslookup :

% nslookup www.ens-lyon.fr
Name:    socrate.ens-lyon.fr
Address:  140.77.1.63
Aliases:  www.ens-lyon.fr


Et si vraiment tu veux utiliser whois, autant le faire correctement, càd
en interrogeant le NIC francais :

% /usr/bin/whois  ens-lyon.fr@whois.nic.fr
[winter.nic.fr]
