I edit the original SFD files and then generate the TTFs from FontForge.

No problem, I can avail the SFD files if required by the package maintainer. As for automatic conversion, I'm not sure about that. I am manually doing the SFD-to-TTF conversion in FontForge.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the quick reply. I've CCed him so hopefully he'll be able to
answer the questions you've raised. Would it make it easier for
packaging the fonts for debian if his fonts were being edited as .sfd
and then converted to .ttf?
