You can follow whatever has been done in many other font packages (preferrably those that have been renamed quite recently as we made a few mistakes in the first packages we renamed) such as fonts-dejavu or fonts-freefont. A transitional package is mandatory and should be kept at least until the next release cycle *and* as long as the package has reverse dependencies.
