As a workaround for now they can do this:
ln -s /path/to/font.ttf /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/
Short term (squeeze), get the X Strike Force to apply the patch in
#539338, the defoma path removed from the default Xorg FontPath and
x-ttcidfont-conf removed from Debian.
Long term, upstream xorg should be fixed to use fontconfig to find fonts.
Fedora uses this as the default Xorg font path:
I need to investigate this more but according to xorg.conf(5) this
means that /etc/X11/fontpath.d can contain a bunch of symlinks to
directories where fonts can be found. I'm not sure how Fedora creates
these links. The Debian xorg-server does not use this though.
Gentoo uses this as its default Xorg font path: /usr/share/fonts
I need to investigate more but I am thinking they either have a patch
to make the font path recursive or install all fonts into the same
