Situation is a little changed, after discussions on IRC.
At the moment, next gnash releases 0.8.8-3 (in experimental NEW due to
addition of swfdec-* dummy packages and others) and 0.8.8-4 (on svn, if
you want to take a look [1]) would only replace swfdec-gnome and
swfdec-mozilla. Removal of swfdec libraries would be done by package
manager.

Great, on February [2].
I've requested its inclusion in desktop [3] as it's already been
discussed a couple of years ago [4].

I solved my technical doubts about versions. Now swfdec-gnome dummy
package has epoch+1 version so it'll prevail on the removed real package
version.
Anyway I'm still convinced we could even do this transition with virtual
packages instead of transitional real packages, hence without passing
through NEW, isn't it?

Package: gnash
Provides: swfdec-gnome
[...]
Package: mozilla-plugin-gnash
Provides: swfdec-mozilla

(mozilla-plugin-gnash will be renamed in browser-plugin-gnash soon [5,6])

Cheers,
Gabriele
