ip-masquerade:a router for my lan

Ciao to all, and sorry my english,
I have done a router for a lan, to share an internet connection (T3) .
I use woody with kernel 2.4.18, eth0 is EXTIF with dhcp client,
and INTIF is eth1 serving a lan with a dhcp server .And squid is started.
I use:

All pc of the lan can connect to internet, but seems more slow than when 
i use IPCHAINS.
Some times the client can't browse the web.
There is problem dowloading files with dc++.
Some one can help me
with some how-to or suggestion?
