RE: Firewall Debian vs SUSE

I use the same iptables firewall script on rh9, rhas3, Debian intel and Debian Alpha.

I suppose it comes down to how or if you want commercial support.

Novell support Suse and they have a world wide network so should have a presence in each country.

If you want zero $ cost support and are happy with mail groups, irc and google searches then Debian would be my choice.

I have used Debian firewalls for 5 years and never had a significant issue.

If you want something like Firewall1 then they do their own black cd which comes free with Firewall1 (I believe). It is a cut down version of RH, or if you want more management capability and logging like mrtg and custom scripts then use RHES3 with hardening from cisecurity or similar.

>From there, there are lots of firewall appliances, Fortenet is worth looking at but not cheap.

Or specialist firewall Linux distros, moded with managment add ons to make your life easy...

Hi,

to get it right, do you want to use a standard distribution or the special
firewall distributions?
if you plan to use the standard distribution it does no matter which one you
take. the firewall is the same programm within suse and debian. so you can
choose your own favorite.

once you have a running version youre able to port it to any other
distribution based on similar libraries.
