mrtg will nicely do the job, but be aware that it talks to a
snmp daemon to collect the traffic info.  now, you can either
"apt-get install snmpd mrtg" (but make sure you have a secure
configuration of snmpd on that router), or you can install mrtg
only and create your own script to get the traffic info from
ifconfig (if you don't want snmpd on that machine).  mrtg has
good documentation to guide your steps.
