problem with iptables

I am trying to run iptables on a woody system; I get the same error with
a 2.4.17 or 2.4.18 kernel.

When I execute iptables (even iptables -L) I get:
/bin/bash: error while loading shared libraries: libncurses.so.5: cannot
open shared object file: Error 23

This error loops continuously until I press ctrl-c to break out.

linncurses.so.5 is is symlinked to libncurses.so.5.2 and this file matches
one from a working system.

Any suggestions?
