The iptables are still considered 'unreliable guides,' and they are in continual development (even though the docs say last modified 3/2000, they are being updated!).

Still, it's useful and mostly accurate information.  I did this exact thing.  I setup another machine as a 2.4 netfilter firewall.  Once it was configured, I replaced my 2.2.x firewall.
