I have managed to fix the sqlite build so that it adapts the existing Debian build, using configure, rather than using the OpenEmbedded method that relied on a customised Makefile. Target repository now includes (arm only): libglib2.0 libsqlite0 libncurses5 libreadline5 Moving on next to the X libraries with the aim of getting Gtk+ done before Fosdem. The basic GPE libraries don't need much more than that but the applications need a bit more. Should still be OK though.
