I was thinking the same... Although I have never used it, it surely

If you need high transmission rates you can go for a fieldbus solution,
such as CAN or PROFIBUS (which works on top of RS-485), but that will
probably get too expensive on the receivers side...

But first take a look at the 1-wire stuff David mentioned, you may find
something that fits your needs.
