Oh, it's a debian problem, sorry. Never mind.
Here on debian, there seems to be some competition over these two files:
# locate gnus-1.gz|xargs ls -l
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        89591 2003-09-14 04:03 /usr/share/info/emacs-21/gnus-1.gz
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root        88791 2003-10-09 12:47 /usr/share/info/gnus-1.gz
# dlocate gnus-1.gz
gnus: /usr/share/info/gnus-1.gz
emacs21-common: /usr/share/info/emacs-21/gnus-1.gz
# apt-cache policy gnus emacs21-common
gnus:
  Installed: 5.10.2-6
  Candidate: 5.10.2-8
emacs21-common:
  Installed: 21.3+1-3
  Candidate: 21.3+1-4

Though maybe they fixed it already, I won't download them on my tiny
modem to find out right now.

Reproduce on debian with:
$ emacs -q
C-h i m g n u s <return> i k e e p - <return>
