unable to build GNU Emacs from CVS

>From time to time I compile GNU Emacs from CVS. Recently I am unable
to do it, because configure reports:

checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

Here is the relevant fragment of config.log:

configure:3011: checking for C compiler default output
configure:3014: gcc    conftest.c  >&5
/usr/bin/ld: cannot open crt1.o: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure:3017: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| #line 2990 "configure"
| /* confdefs.h.  */
| #define PACKAGE_NAME ""
| #define PACKAGE_TARNAME ""
| #define PACKAGE_VERSION ""
| #define PACKAGE_STRING ""
| #define MAIL_USE_POP 1
| /* end confdefs.h.  */
| int
| main ()
| {
|   ;
|   return 0;
| }
configure:3056: error: C compiler cannot create executables

I use Woody, but I've upgraded the kernel because of some problems
with my sound card.

I will appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Best regards
