IIRC there were changes in the method to configure mail sources between
5.7 and 5.8.8, so upgrading can break mail fetching.

OTOH, people who use Gnus should probably be upgrading to 5.8.8
anyways, IMHO.  5.8.8 adds MIME support, among other things.
