Here: rc3, installed with desktop=lxde for testing; sort of strange: 
gnome comes up as default desktop. (lxde is available, too, but not the 
default)

Yes, same here; so that backup would be executed. But configuring the 
backup (scheduler) via slbackup-php will put the file slbackup into 
/etc/cron.d
