Getent seem return what it should that is it gets the uid and gid and
home directory.
Also  /var/lib/lpad is own by openldap:openldap.

does getent passwd return anything from ldap?

What is the ownership of the files in /var/lib/ldap ? Is it 
openldap:openldap ?
