I tested this myself, inserting an error message using 'logger -t testmsg
error: something is wrong' while d-i was running, and was able to reproduce it.
The screen stayed blank forever. The reason is that the error message
dialog is displayed on tty7, and waiting for user input.
By pressing Alt-<left arrow>, I found the dialog box and could select '<OK>' to
continue. Is this the same problem you experience?
The test run started after usplash ended, so I believe the code we added to
stop usplash is ineffective and irrelevant.
