[Bug 1075] New: Host names should be more flexible / less generic

http://bugs.skolelinux.no/show_bug.cgi?id=1075

Summary: Host names should be more flexible / less generic
           Product: Skolelinux
           Version: sarge-rc2
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: Configuration
        AssignedTo: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
        ReportedBy: rgx@gmx.de

Up to now, skolelinux was considered to roll out in empty space. One of its
strenghts is being pre-configured to the max.

Nowardays more and more schools need to integrate existing infrastructure. Also
for security reasons, more flexible namings are desirable. I quote Arno Weber
from user@skolelinux.de (my translation):

"Checking the feasability of "Migration SuSE-Schulserver -> SKOLE", I miss a
simple possibility to configure our schools individual name.

This means e.g. (instead of):

  LDAP Base DN: dc=grundschule,dc=irgendwo,dc=de
                                (dc=skole,dc=skolelinux,dc=no)

  DNS-Domain: Grundschule-Irgendwo.de
                                (intern)

  Samba-WG: SCHULNETZ
                                (SKOLELINUX)

Regarding this, I'd like to ask, why those changes are not possible during
install process. ...

Especially with extern mail traffic, the current solution of skolelinux is very
unsatisfying. Changing names needs many steps of adaption and might get lost
after update. Also from security aspects, generic names are a real problem."
