Sounds like you use an old cable for the harddrive. You need to use
ultra-DMA cables for harddrives to avoid this kind of problems.
Ultra-DMA cables are stiff (single thick cobber wires) where old cables
(still used for CDs) are softer (many thin cobber wires).
