I agree.
But with that said - I know of situations still relevant: Setting up
kiosk machines for events (see
http://www.dnalounge.com/backstage/src/kiosk/ for an old example).
For kiosk setups the only sane approach as I see it is adding scripts
tied to login and/or logout that wipes out completely the account so
that no evil tricks can be lurking for the next one using that same account.
