Unrelated to Skolelinux, but related to Courier:
I had a similar issue (using different mail lcient = different errors) and used
the same fix. The clue is that the MAXPERIP-value must be higher than the max
number of connections the client is set to cache. Using Thunderbird you find
this setting under the advanced settings for the account.
Default in Thunderbird was 5 connections and the default in Courier was 4.
