for you the workaround seems trivial: 
 
you are a small school, and a moderatly modern server is able to handle 20-30 
remote users. 
 
So you should not need to import your Filesystem over NFS but can run 
everything on one server. then you can have as many groups as your heart 
wishes for and you dont have any problems with this.
