Screening of Internet's Own Boy during Debutsav'14
Hi,
Its very good to see how Debutsav'14 is shaping up. If possible I would
suggest screening Internet's Own Boy[1] movie during the fest. The movie
is very well made and has very good impact on the viewers. Though I do
not know if Aaron had directly contributed to Debian but for someone
from India, it is definitely opens up many questions as to why we need
to talk about freedom, freedom of knowledge and freedom of Internet.
Another reason why we should promote it is that other than Free Software
Community, no one can connect to someone like Aaron and hence only we
the Free Software Community need to spread the word about what he did
and what happened to him and how it also has larger impact on us. As
someone rightly pointed out, he is the first martyr of the Internet
Freedom revolution. We at FSMK Summer Camp 14 had screened the movie for
our 200 participants and its impact was very visible from the responses
of the students during the discussion which was led by Lawrence Liang
from Alternative Law Forum. PyCon India also had screened the movie in
Bangalore[2] and the response was very good. I hope Debutsav'14 can also
find some time to screen the movie and spread the ideas that Aaron was
working on. FSMK is also trying to come up with subtitles for the movie
in Indic languages to take the movie to more and more people. I myself
am doing it for Hindi and almost 70% is done[3]. Other volunteers at
FSMK have taken up kannada and around 30% is done[4]. If interested some
students can take it up as an activity to come up with subtitles in
Malayalam and also target to finish it up before the event.
