diversions and conffiles?

I was trying to divert some conffiles today and found dpkg didn't seem 
all that happy with the idea.

The manpage of dpkg-divert didn't clearly state one way or the other, 
and googling gave mixed answers, so I'm asking here for a definitive answer:

  Is it valid to try to divert a conffile?

If not, are there any other tricks that can be used to distribute a set 
of conffile customizations in a package?
