Creating UDEBS

Hello,

I have been stricken by a need to modify the Debian installer slightly
to provide for automatic backups of existing disk partitions in the
context of a preseeded auto-installer. From what I have seen, the d-i
installer components are provided in the form of udebs.

I hate to admit it, but these things are hardly documented at all. I
have seen a little documentation on how to create them, but nothing
seems incredibly complete, let alone official. Can anyone here please
outline their creation steps and, most importantly, how to get them
registered within the installer framework to be started at a specific
time in the installer from a customly-mastered CD?

What other things about udebs should I know?

What I would like to accomplish with the UDEB's is essentially the following:
1.) Check for the existence of a certain file system by mounting each
partition the installer finds and looking for a signature file.
2.) If that partition is found, keep it mounted and rsync its content
to a storage server.
3.) Resume with the install and repartition the disks for re-install.

While I can imagine that some might find a better way of accomplishing
this other than udebs, I can assure you that this method best fits my
needs.

Thank you,

Matt T. Proud

p.s. - Maybe udebs could be documented in some future version of the
Debian Policy Manual --- is this possible?
