hey there, basically, i have this happen to me a whole lot:

dpkg-buildpackage: source package is $package
dpkg-buildpackage: source version is $version
dpkg-buildpackage: source maintainer is $maintainer
dpkg-buildpackage: host architecture is i386
 fakeroot debian/rules clean
 /usr/bin/fakeroot: line 133: debian/rules: Permission denied

which will happen if you've applied a diff to an orig.tar.gz and
haven't changed the permissions yourself. what do you think of either

a) having dpkg-buildpackage chmod +x debian/rules if the permissions
   don't allow it

   or

b) execute

   fakeroot make -f debian/rules

   instead of fakeroot debian/rules

?

b) will never happen. dpkg doesn't require the file to be a makefile.

As for a), if you do things yourself, you must fix them yourself.
