Bug#256302: XSI:isms in several scripts

The "XSI" annotation means that it's an optional extension to the standard,
so a conformant shell need not support it, and therefore a portable
POSIX sh script cannot assume its presence. In current Debian
policy, the only variance from strict extensional POSIX is the "echo -n"
thing.
