Package: apt-get
Version: 0.5.5.1

Trying to run apt-get dist-upgrade or apt-get install <foo> results in the=
=20
following error message each time:

dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 46772 packag=

lowed=20

(The character there looks like an euro sign on my screen.)

Here's an example:

jabberwocky:/home/janka# apt-get install reportbug

I run unstable, Linux Kernel version is 2.4.20, shared C-library =20
libc-2.3.1.so.

This seems to me like a possible locale-related problem. Most of my locales=
=20
are set to fi_FI@euro:=20
LANG=3Dfi_FI@euro
LC_CTYPE=3Dfi_FI
LC_NUMERIC=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_TIME=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_COLLATE=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_MONETARY=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_MESSAGES=3Den_US
LC_PAPER=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_NAME=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_ADDRESS=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_TELEPHONE=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_MEASUREMENT=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_IDENTIFICATION=3D"fi_FI@euro"
LC_ALL=3D

Doing "export LANG=3DC" (that resulted to the following locales) and retryi=
ng=20
produced the same error message, though:
LANG=3DC
LC_CTYPE=3Dfi_FI
LC_NUMERIC=3D"C"
LC_TIME=3D"C"
LC_COLLATE=3D"C"
LC_MONETARY=3D"C"
LC_MESSAGES=3Den_US
LC_PAPER=3D"C"
LC_NAME=3D"C"
LC_ADDRESS=3D"C"
LC_TELEPHONE=3D"C"
LC_MEASUREMENT=3D"C"
LC_IDENTIFICATION=3D"C"
LC_ALL=3D

This problem has started somewhere during the last week; unfortunately I=20
cannot remember the exact date of my last working update, but in any case i=
t=20
was not much longer ago than one, max two, weeks.=20

Best regards,

=2D-=20
Jaana Heino

The submitter reported, via private mail to me, that after replacing the
problematic part the available file with a known-correct one, the problem
went away. I conclude that the available file was simply corrupt, and dpkg
was correct in rejecting it.
