You mean provide their own apt and dpkg (or wrappers to same), duplicating what you
provide and maintain?  Why not just accept patches to dpkg?

I realize that a lot of work would be needed to add this capability to all the required
tools.  But I'm sure there are enough people willing to do this (such as myself and Tim
Jansen) that we would be able to do a good job.  If we can come up with a good "debiff"
format and a well-coded, well-tested set of patches to the tools, why not let us have
this feature?
