Yes, it is somehow redundant, but I think it should be on chapter 4,
becuase currently user can easly find this page by websearch,
and not read fully introduction.

But It should be stronger, yes.

Maybe combine both:

   Your system must have been updated to the latest stable point release of
   lenny. If you have older distribution installed (like etch), or
   your lenny system is not up to date or you are just unsure, follow the instructions
   in Section A.1, “Upgrading your lenny system”. Without performing this step
   upgrade to squeeze will most likely fail and can result in broken system,
   which will need heavy manual interventions.
