Re: DebianDoc postscript output

Hi,

I've noticed this too. First of all, the SGML source never can do
anything wrong to cause less optimal looking output. This is always a
problem in the output generators. This is supposed to be the whole
idea (or at least a part) behind SGML. So, you don't have to worry
about the tutorial being the cause of this.

I think it's a problem with Lout. If you have a normalized SGML
source file, the text itself is indented using spaces. Apparently Lout
doesn't ignore them and outputs some of them. A solution is to remove
leading and trailing spaces before letting Lout do its job (not in
examples where it usually is explicitly present). That line breaks
matter is new to me. Maybe it's time for filing some bug reports
against Lout.

As fas a going to LaTeX, this is already on the TODO list for version
1.1. The German version of the installation manual package has a
LaTeX output generator and I already talked with Christian Leutloff
about "moving" it to DebianDoc-SGML. It will be implemented such
that there's a choice between using either Lout of Latex for going to
PostScript (at least for now). So, this will be available in one of
the next releases.

In general, if there're more ideas for improving the generated output
or things which look "ugly", please let me know. For now I already
have plans to improve and align the author/version/copyright parts of
the documents as well as the example layout.

Thanks,

Ardo
