He didn't _make_ you escalate the issue.  You were under no coercion.

You _chose_ to escalate the issue.

That choice may have been shrewd, imprudent, or ambivalent, but I think
it's better for Debian's health if people make a habit of speaking and
writing such that they own their decisions.

The passive voice has utility in laboratory reports or other
scientifically oriented works intended to stimulate the reproduction of
empirical findings by notionally objective experimenters.

It has little or no place documenting the exercise of human judgement.
