Not at all. Packaging is an extra layer of safety. Upstream release may be 
outright broken, unusable or buggy with critical regressions. Presumably 
maintainer at least tested the packages maybe even by using.

Therefore I consider packages to be a better alternative than direct use of 
upstream software, even when you need to use a package from "testing".

Also all "stable" packages were once in "testing" and one can never be sure 
if any package was tested enough before it become "stable".

Careful use of canary pre-production systems where you roll updates first, 
before deploying to production, allows to mitigate risks of regressions due 
to software upgrades.
