I'm afraid this pretty much is not going to happen, besides being
there no technical advantage at all (to the contrary), and given the
multiple previous very obnoxious interactions with upstream and some
of its supporters (not all of course), filled with FUD and extremely
biased and invalid claims.

Indeed. And at this point, I'm starting to consider adding an entry of
its own just to cover the lzip situation in the dpkg FAQ…
