I think it would be nice to make restoring the original configuration
easier. The various --force-conf* options by dpkg are not easily
discovered and require the binary package (*.deb) to still be
available.
Having the original configuration available also would allow to easier
generate a "diff" of local changes. This makes it easier to support
systems usually maintained by different people, or even systems not
using a configuration management system in general.
Maybe we should look at [1] for some ideas here.
