I have no informed opinion on whether ffmpeg or libav is better. On the
security front, it looks indeed like ffmpeg is doing better but it is
still hearsay.

What I know, though, is that it is not realistic to maintain two such
libraries in the course of a stable release.

Said otherwise: if we have a consensus that ffmpeg is better, then let’s
do the switch NOW. Not after the freeze.

If it’s too late, libav will be the sole implementation in jessie, and
the switch will have to be done for jessie+1.
