hi,
I've read this and like to give another perspective. Let me first
introduce myself to let you know, what my point of view is.
I use Debian since "Potato" was released. My first package was done
with Etch. The packages I've created were packages just for my own. It
has been 5 since then.
So, I'm not a maintainer. I'm just a user who created packages with no
public need. Therefore - I think - there is no need to do it perfect.
How came I throught this?
Well, I just read the Debian New Maintainers' Guide.
After a few minutes I realised there is no magic done here. After a
few tries I could make a debian/rules that clone (or update) and
checkout an git repository of upstream.
my opinion: don't confuse flexibility with complexity. Complexity is
necessary for flexibility. That's why I'm using Debian for more than
10 years. It's not just gentoos way, it's not just Debians way. Debian
just give me tools to do it my way (TM) AND let me make it stable. It
hasn't to be obvious, it had to be working.
