HTTP was just an example. But like said on the thread "teaching users how to submit good bug reports" we can support proxies too, and there always be setups we will not have any remote access, it's not a reason to do not do anything to help those who can't easily use SMTP. Nowadays, require SMTP doesn't seem judicious.
