Similar to original report, my system would hang on shutdown / reboot due to inability to unmount network file systems (network was already taken down).
/etc/init.d/umountnfs.sh is written such that when called with argument
'start' it does nothing. It does the unmounting when called with
argument 'stop'
In runlevels 0 (shutdown) and 6 (reboot), umountnfs.sh is the link
target of S31umountnfs.sh - hence it gets called with the 'start' argument
and does nothing. Renaming the links to K31umountnfs.sh (so that the script
is called with 'stop' argument) solved the problem for me.
